Liverpool will be without captain Jordan Henderson for the visit of West Ham. The midfielder is expected to miss the next three weeks after injuring his hamstring in the defeat at Atletico Madrid, though Jurgen Klopp has allayed any long-term injury fears.

They will be hoping to maintain this remarkable record against West Ham at Anfield tonight, where they can go one step closer to winning their first league title since 1990.

Manager David Moyes defended himself from critics saying his tactics were deemed ‘negative’ against Man City and beleives goal difference might be crucial to their Premier League survival.

“There will be the majority of teams who will find it difficult to get results against them.

“We did as well. We tried to get something, who knows come the end of the season that goal difference might be important. So it is something we have to take into consideration as well but the way to stay up is to win games.

“It’s the first time back at Anfield for the senior team in what feels like a while, because of the mid-season break and then successive away matches in the Premier League and Champions League,” says Klopp in the match-day programme.

Liverpool already have more than three times the points of their opponents this evening, and while Jurgen Klopp’s side are aiming to extend their advantage over second-placed Manchester City to 22 points, the Hammers are desperate for even a draw which would lift them above Aston Villa and out of the bottom three.

“But at the level we live at now, games are close and so competitive and the line between being in a dressing room with the result you want and the opposite feeling is very narrow.”

Ryan Fredericks will miss the trip to Anfield after injuring ligaments in his shoulder in West Ham’s defeat at Manchester City. The Hammers await results from a specialist before knowing the true extent of the right-back’s injury.

“I must say it’s fantastic to be back. We come into this after contrasting results – having won at Norwich by a single goal and lost in Madrid by the identical margin.

Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool’s UCL defeat at Atletico Madrid: “I could not fault for a second the attitude and application of the team in Madrid last Tuesday. The intensity of our performance was really pleasing and I told that to the boys. There was nothing from last week that should set us back. We should look at it the other way. An opportunity to immediately strike back. We have a talented opponent coming to our home and they want to leave with the win. This is enough motivation. I will be happy if we take this approach into the match tonight. We’ll need to be at our very best – we know that.”

David Moyes on West Ham’s relegation scrap: “In the main many of the supporters I have spoken to have been very supportive and really understanding. We went there [Man City] hoping to get something from the game. We’ve tried other formations and other players that haven’t worked either. We’re trying to find situations and look for situations that will help us. I’ve never classed staying up at any club a success and I never will. And certainly not a club the size in West Ham. I have a job to do, we have a job to do to stay up, unfortunately.”

“In many ways both those games and both those results illustrate how hard we have to keep working if we want to achieve things. It didn’t feel to us that we played worse in the game we lost – maybe at times we played better.

For once they European champions come into a game on the back of a defeat after going down 1-0 to Atletico Madrid in midweek in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

West Ham arrive having been beaten by City, and now face another brutal test at Anfield, but with a string of tricky games coming up and time running out, David Moyes’s team cannot afford to lie down here.

Moyes said: “The players spirit is very good but I think everybody in here, who writes and who watches football knows how difficult it is to play Man City and Liverpool away, and we have played Liverpool at home which we had just over a week ago, nobody doubts that.
